What is Take Twelve Today? Take Twelve Today is a prayer movement created to guide and ENCOURAGE Christians to take 12 minutes a day to listen for God in silence. It is not easy to listen for God. It takes commitment, courage and practice. But according to 2 Timothy 1:7, “God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
Why Take Twelve? We live in a constantly connected culture but many of us feel disconnected. When we connect with God at a deeper level by cultivating silence and practicing meditation, we can connect with others and ourselves more authentically. And….we also develop neurological connections for love, compassion, kindness and tolerance. We begin to EMBODY the fruit of the spirit: kindness, gentleness, self-control, love, joy, peace, patience, goodness and faithfulness Gal 5:22-23.
During the first 16 centuries of the Christian church’s history, contemplative prayer or listening for God in silence was the acknowledged goal of Christian spirituality. We all know that if we really want to develop a better relationship with someone, be it our spouse, our children or God; it takes time, trust and the ability to listen. When we learn to listen we learn to become present to each other. That is what God wants. The presence that EMERGES from our encounter with Christ in meditation is then shared with the world.
Jesus went away by himself many times to be still and listen for God. And he invites us to do the same. Mark 6:30- “The apostles gathered around Jesus and told him all that they had done and taught. He said to them, ‘Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest awhile.’”
In silence, we learn first to slow down, take deep breaths and refocus on what is really important. In silent prayer, we focus our attention on God and God’s love for us and all of God’s creation. Silence gives our body, soul and mind a well needed rest. In this rest, we begin to see and experience Christ more clearly in our lives and in the lives of others.
